The 4.69 kilometre Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is
a major new race circuit in Portimão, Portugal.
Since its inception, the Algarve circuit has drawn a number of
positive reviews from drivers, particularly for the undulating
nature of the circuit and the overtaking opportunities presented
because of the width of the track.
Construction work on the €195 million track was only
completed in October 2008, but the circuit has already attracted a
host of high profile championships - including hosting the final
round of the 2008 World Superbike Championship just a month after
development was finished.
In addition, the Algarve circuit has hosted Formula One testing -
with McLaren, Honda, Ferrari and Toyota all having run at the venue
- as well as GP2, A1 Grand Prix and a 1000km Le Mans Series night
race. In July 2010 the circuit will also welcome both the FIA WTCC
and Formula Two championships for the first time. F2 has already
tested in Portimão at the end of 2009, with Kazim
Vasiliauskas setting the fastest time over the two days.
