Alex Fontana considers F2 switch for 2012
Swiss racer impressed with Williams JPH1B car during recent test
Alex Fontana, the reigning European F3 Open champion, says he's
considering a switch to Formula Two for 2012 following a successful
test debut in the series.
The 19-year-old, who secured this year's F3 Open title with two
wins and seven podiums, impressed on both test days of official
testing at Spain's Circuit de Catalunya recently, improving
throughout to finish seventh and fourth overall against a highly
competitive field.
Fontana, one of four Swiss drivers taking part, told formulatwo.com
afterwards: "I enjoyed the test and felt confident with the car.
The driving style really suits me and I like the power and the way
it handles. Obviously it took time to get used to it compared to
what I've driven before but overall I'm pleased and F2 certainly
remains one of my options for next year depending on sponsorship
and raising the budget."
Prior to the F3 Open, Fontana competed in Formula Azzurra (2009) in
which he finished seventh, the Italian Formula Three Championship
in 2010 as well as a one-off round of GP3 in 2011 where he finished
sixth in only his second race in the category. More recently he
sampled Formula Renault 3.5 machinery as part of official testing
at Aragon.
